- Partake in educational speeches and moments highlighting the struggles, perseverance, and the underlying issues that have caused a deficit in equality for our people. The goal of this event is not only to bring together and empower our black community, but to educate the people of Eugene as we look forward to a more unified and justice based tomorrow.Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Last year, Oregon House passed a bill acknowledging Juneteenth as a state holiday.Today, Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. It is a day, a week, and in some areas a month marked with celebrations, guest speakers, picnics, and family gatherings. It is a time for reflection and rejoicing. It is a time for assessment, self-improvement, and for planning the future. Its growing popularity signifies a level of maturity and dignity in America long overdue. In cities across the country, people of all races, nationalities and religions are joining hands to truthfully acknowledge a period in our history that shaped and continues to influence our society today. Sensitized to the conditions and experiences of others, only then can we make significant and lasting improvements in our society.Yβall, last year was the biggest celebration this town has ever seen! Please come out for this event as we acknowledge and celebrate the emancipation and freedom of our people. America wouldnβt be what it is without the contributions of Black people! Letβs show Eugene how itsβ done!***Organizers will make every effort to ensure the safety and health of the event and its participants, including with regards to COVID-19.Alton Baker Park100 Day Island RdEugene, OR 97401 -
