Outdoor exploration activities have long been regarded as a “white activity.” Whether this is because of the media’s portrayal of the “outdoorsy” types only being white or how Black people are met with racism/violence when they do explore the outdoors (as recently seen in the racist incident against Black birder Christian Cooper in Central Park), it is a narrative that should be dismantled. People of color (especially our Black community members) should feel comfortable taking up space in nature (and in general!), and it is an act of violence to exclude them from outdoor exploration activities/recreation.
In an effort to make the BIPOC (and Latinx!) community feel welcome and safe in outdoor spaces, I am organizing a short nature-guided hike at Mount Pisgah. I believe this could operate as a fun opportunity to simultaneously learn more about the native Kalapuya wildlife (trees, wildflowers, habitats, mushrooms, animals, etc) as well as forge a relationship with the Earth and community.
The walk will last about an hour. It will be on a generally flat trail to make it accessible and easy to walk. Snacks and water will be provided. If you do not have access to a ride, one can be coordinated for you. If you are able to provide rides, let me know.
If you want to get involved or speak about your experiences as a person of color in an outdoor framework, dm me and we’ll make space for your voice.
If you are alter-abled, but would like to attend, let me know and I’ll find a way to make it a virtual experience for you to join!
To keep places like Mount Pisgah open, we will need to practice social distancing, and if you wouldn't be too inconvenienced by a facial covering, these are also advised.

About the organizer: My name is Sol Navarro, I am a Queer Hispanic Transmasculine person and I’ve been camping since I was a kid. I was briefly a nature-guide at Mount Pisgah so I am aware of its history and wildlife; however, I specialize in native wildflowers. I am very passionate about the outdoors and outdoor education. I want this event to feel safe and welcoming to all.
